Late adulthood brings real physical change — but not all of it is the same kind. Some is primary aging: the universal, built-in decline of time itself. Some is secondary aging: disease and lifestyle layered on top, much of it preventable. Filter by type, then tap each system to explore.

Primary vs secondary aging.Primary aging is the built-in, universal decline that comes with time alone — presbyopia, presbycusis, stiffening arteries. Secondary aging comes from disease, habits, and environment — atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, disuse — so much of it is preventable or even reversible. And normal aging is not disease: dementia, for instance, is a pathology, not an inevitable part of growing old.
