Scoring the First Five Minutes

Virginia Apgar built her score to standardise what people meant when they said a baby “looked bad”. Build one component by component and watch the resuscitation decision run ahead of the total. Then read five heads — caput, cephalhaematoma and the subgaleal haemorrhage that can bleed a newborn into shock — classify the measurements, and sort sixteen findings into normal variant or escalate.
