Reading the pyramid
Abraham Maslow introduced this hierarchy in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation." Lower needs generally take priority, but the sequence is a tendency, not a rigid rule — most people are partly satisfied at several levels at once. The familiar pyramid diagram came later; Maslow himself never drew one. In his final years he also added self-transcendence above self-actualization.
