Prejudice vs. Discrimination: Attitude or Action?

Everyday speech treats these as one word. Sociology does not. Prejudice is a prejudgment — an attitude about a group, held in advance of the evidence and often against it. Discrimination is unequal treatment — an act that leaves a trace in the world: a discarded résumé, a steered buyer, a denied loan. They travel together often enough that people assume they must. In 1949 Robert Merton showed that all four combinations occur. Tap the grid, then sort twelve cases into it.
