Simplifications: field of view width = 180,000 µm ÷ magnification (a typical student microscope). Sizes are typical adult sizes. Swimming is slowed to about one tenth of real speed so you can follow cells. Contractile vacuole rate is modelled as proportional to the difference between the cell's solute level (taken as 120 mOsm) and the water outside, about 10 pumps a minute in pond water; real rates vary by species and temperature.

Simplified Ross-Macdonald style model of one village of 1,000 people and their Anopheles mosquitoes. Rates are rounded teaching values: mosquitoes live about 10 days, the parasite needs about 10 days inside a mosquito, the liver stage lasts about 8 days, untreated blood-stage infections last about 2 months, and immunity fades after about 4 months. Bed nets cut bites on covered people and kill some mosquitoes. Mosquito control cuts new mosquitoes and shortens their lives. Liver-stage drugs (prophylaxis) clear parasites before they reach the blood. Blood-stage drugs cure illness in about a week (including gametocyte carriage). The estimated R₀ is the average number of new human infections that one infection causes in a fully susceptible village; malaria fades out when it stays below 1. Real malaria also depends on season, age, immunity, drug resistance and parasite species.
Problems are randomly generated. Number answers are checked to within 0.5%. Picture questions use "predict, then watch": answer first, then the picture reveals and animates the answer.
