Stress and Autonomic Balance Lab

Run a day in a simulated body and watch the autonomic balance, heart rhythm and cortisol respond, predict what each branch does and practise heart rate math, sort the ideas, and work through real life situations. Every number here is a rounded teaching value. Nothing here is graded.

Part 1: Autonomic Balance Simulator

Teaching modelA simplified model of one healthy adult across one day. A stressor, such as an exam or a work deadline, happens from 9 to 11 am each day. The settings shape autonomic balance, heart rate, HRV and cortisol. Real people vary a lot; this is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan.

MeasureValue

How the model works: sympathetic and parasympathetic activity are each scored from 0 to 100 percent. They depend on the time of day, sleep, the daily stressor, how long the stress has lasted (which builds allostatic load), sleep debt and recovery activities. Heart rate and HRV (RMSSD) follow the balance; the ECG beats are generated from that heart rate with breathing linked variation. Cortisol follows a daily rhythm with a peak after waking at 7 am, a rise after the stressor, and a flatter shape with long lasting stress and short sleep. Simplified for learning.
